How I Produce the Your Health at The Crossroads Podcast

I am getting an increasing amount of people to ask me how I produce my podcast, so I figured I would provide this post to refer people to. It really isn’t too difficult…at the end of the day, it takes a few steps and some patience. If you need more detail, e-mail me and I will update this post.

If you happen to be curious about how I produce the Your Health At The Crossroads Podcast – either you just want to know or you’re considering a podcast of your own – I am letting you know right here how I do it. I have no secrets or proprietary information. I am going to tell you exactly how it is done.

My goal is to make it clear how I produce each episode of my podcast without overwhelming you with details. Here goes.

Equipment/Software

Microphone: MXL990 USB

Recording Software: Audacity – this is free recording software that does the job just fine. I only need something that will allow me to pull all of my mp3 files together and allow me to use some effects here and there (fade in/out, normalize, etc.), and Audacity has all of that. I mean, you can spend money on Pro Tools or some other top notch software, but you really don’t need all of that when something as good as Audacity is free.

Skype: I use this to record online interviews

Zoom: I use this to record online interviews

Recording Hardware: Sony IC Recorder – This little portable recorder does a great job. If you have a smartphone, you can probably use whatever voice recorder that it has. I don’t have a smartphone, so I have no choice, lol. One day, I believe I will upgrade from this, but for now, it is more than sufficient.

Intro/Outro

My intro and outro were produced by life.on flow. I might seem biased since this is my brother, but I mean, he’s good. Don’t take my word for it…listen to one of my podcast episodes and check the intro out, or better yet, listen to some life.on flow music production.

Podcast Hosting and Syndication

My podcast host is SoundCloud. After you set up a profile on the site, SoundCloud provides a RSS Feed link for your podcast. It is this link that you will provide to other podcast platforms that you want your podcast syndicated through.

My podcast is syndicated through iTunes, Stitcher and iHeartRadio. All of this syndication is free, by the way. However, I pay $15/month to host my podcast on SoundCloud, only because I went over 150 minutes of content.

Step-by-Step Episode Creation

  1. Open Audacity
  2. Import my intro and outro and fade in/out as desired (I actually saved a template so that I don’t have to do this every single time.
  3. Import any interview recordings (either save from my digital voice recorder onto the computer and then import, or import from wherever I saved my Skype/Zoom mp3 interview).
  4. Record commentary before the intro, after the intro, and after the interview.
  5. Edit all sound files as necessary.
  6. Export as mp3 and fill in all metadata (it will ask you to do this in the process of exporting).
  7. Upload the finished mp3 to SoundCloud, along with a picture and description of the podcast episode (once you upload, it automatically syndicates to wherever you shared your RSS Feed).
  8. Share via my e-mail list and social media.

That’s it! It usually takes me 1-2 hours to finish everything. That does not include the time it takes to conduct interviews, though. But it’s pretty straightforward.

Want more details than I’ve provided? E-mail me with your question and I will fill you in, and I will also update this post with the new details.
